#Weekly Highlights and Forecasts

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 05 - 11 October 2020

Solar activity was very low. Regions 2774 (S25, L=308, class/area Axx/010 on 09 Oct) and 2775 (S24, L=272, class/area Cro/050 on 10 Oct) were absent of significant flare activity and unremarkable throughout the period. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 05, 07, and 10 Oct with a peak flux of 3,236 pfu on 07/1535 UTC. Moderate flux levels were observed throughout the remainder of the period.

Geomagnetic field activity reached isolated active levels on 05 and 06 Oct due to a slightly enhanced interplanetary magnetic field.

Quiet conditions were observed on 07-11 Oct under a background solar wind regime.

News October 2020

At last!

Solar activity is picking up.

Two regions worthwhile mentioning this reporting month:

AR 2776, S14 164 rot 2236, was at its maximum on the 18th October with 100 mvh and a classification according to NOAA at CSO.

Region 2776 appeared about 1,5 day from the east limb and developed fairly quickly and was for some days a C-group but later was an H-spot.

Region went around west limb on the 25th, but only the day after another group evolved a bit over a day travel from the central meridian.

This region was also, as all the other regions, member of new cycle 25, and all of them also on the southern hemisphere.

Region 2778, S20, 86 rot 2236 quickly developed from a small C-group

to a very nice and big EKO class group which had its maximum on the 29th October at 300 mvh! The largest group since AR 2738 in April 2019.

The group persisted until month end but decayed.

At the same time small region AR 2779 appeared.

Activity did not slow down in November either.

We shall come back to this in our next MPR-issue.

Until then, keep on observing as long as sun altitude and weather permits!

Picture received from

CV-107 Monty Leventhal OAM in Australia showing beginning of November's

even more spectacular region AR 2781.

More on November activity next month!
